Biography

David has designed visually interesting and evocative work throughout South East Asia/Australia region. His work has always stood apart giving it a distinct and striking look. He has illustrated his diverse and unique ability to express a vision through all his film work.


In 2011 David completed two films in Indonesia.


The Philosophers, directed by John Huddles and produced by George Zakk, XXX and The Chronicles of Riddick. Starring Bonnie Wright from Harry Potter Series, and James DArcy as Mr Zimit, a school teacher who leads a philosophy class into imagined worlds of a catastrophic nature.
The majority of the film was shot in the studios of Jakarta where David designed beautiful sets of an imagined world of a life underground in a post nuclear world. While the exterior sets were built with the backdrop of Indonesias iconic scenery, including Mt. Bromo volcanic mountains and Prambanan temples.
David designed this film keeping the architecture through Indonesias history as part of the character for this film. A celebration of mixed culture and architecture to bring a unique fusion to draw on, From 8th century Hindu temples, Dutch Colonial architecture, stunning Javanese timber structures and contemporary cutting edge post modernist architecture.


David then went on to design the film Java Heat, starring Mickey Rourke and Kellan Lutz, Immortals.  An action thriller about an American who teams up with an Indonesian policeman to track down a terrorist. Is set in Java central province of Yogyakarta. Davids influence here for the sets and locations was to embrace the flavor of this region, strong Muslim motifs through architecture, and a wonderful sense of beauty and life through colour, to allow our viewer to also be lost in a foreign country, struggling to find the answers our expat Jake is looking for.


In 2008 David designed  Dance of the Dragon - set in South Korea and shot entirely in Singapore - is a love story starring Jason Scott Lee, Fann Wong and Jang Hyuk. David pushed the drama into a romantic setting, contrasting visually stunning period settings of Korea, and referencing the colonial Singaporean architecture. David completely fabricated sets for the film on a make shift back-lot which worked almost as a character in the film.


His efforts earned him an Award at the West Hollywood International film festival in 2008 and many critics praised the feature's visual design as striking and distinctive.
Throughout his time David has become highly sought after within the Australasia region. Working in Malaysia with Director Gregor Jordan Buffalo Soldiers, Ned Kelly  and DOP Javier Aguirresarobe Twilight- New Moon, Vicky Christina Barcelona.


In 2009 collaborating with acclaimed filmmaker Vincent Ward,  What dreams may come,  Writer: Alien3. David merged painted backgrounds and worked on compositing separate shot elements to bring this visually rich film the uncompromised look they were aspiring to.


David Initially started his career on major Australian television dramas, Heartbreak High and Water Rats. He went on to work through the studios on features including, Jerry Bruckheimer's Kangaroo Jack  and The Mystery of Natalie Wood.


He also developed in-house corporate design and art direction into the highly regarded PR company Professional Public Relations and Vision Splendid Media. During this time David formed relationships and made many successful campaigns, product brandings and launches for clients such as Nike, Volvo and Bacardi.
David studied at the prestigious Australian Film and Television School – AFTRS, in Sydney graduating in 2003 with a Masters degree in Production Design.


David has worked solidly in the film industry for the past seventeen years. His disciplined approach and enthusiasm drive his work, and have earned him the reputation as someone who can be trusted to bring a distinct vision to every project. David is rapidly becoming recognised as a unique designer with a strong approach to style, story and visual direction.
